Top Five Lyrical Choice (2016)

To save you the bother (and the ordeal) here are some lyrics taken out of context from the top five songs currently (as of the 6th of April 2016) in the UK. Don’t say I didn’t warn you – this is your warning.

1.     “I Took a Pill in Ibiza” by Mike Posner (SeeB Remix)

I took a pill in Ibiz

To show Aviici I was cool

And when I finally got sober

I felt ten years sober

But f*ck it it was something to do.

You don’t wanna ride the bus like this,

Never knowing who to trust like this

2.     “Work from Home” by Fifth Harmony feat. Ty Dolla $ign

You don’t gotta go to work work work work work work work work

But you gotta put in work work work work work work work work

Let my body do the work work work work work work work work

Let’s put it into motion

I’mma give you a promotion

I’ll make it feel like a vacay

Turn the bed into an ocean

3.     “7 Years” by Sean Graham

Once I was seven years old my mamma told me

Go make yourself some friends or you’ll be lonely.

Once I was seven years old.

Once I was eleven years old my daddy told me

Go get your self a wife or you’ll be lonely

Once I was eleven years old

4.     “Lush Life” by Zara Larsson

It was a crush

Now I might have went and said too much

But that’s all it was

So I gave up

I live my day as if it was the last

Live my day as if there was no past

Doin’ it all night, all summer

Doin’ it the way I wanna

5.     “Work” by Rihanna feat. Drake

Work work work work work work he said me haffi

Work work work work work work he see me do me

Dirt dirt dirt dirt dirt dirt

So me put in

Work work work work work work

Ner ner ner ner ner ner

When you a gon learn learn learn learn learn

Before the tables turn turn turn turn turn turn

Yeah, ok

You need to get done done done done at work, come over

We just need to slow the motion

Don’t give that away to no one

Long distance, I need you

When I see potential and just gotta see it through

If you had a twin I’d still chose you

So. “Work” seems to be the main word in play these days. The music is all the usual slowed beats and mid-tempo chopped and screw style electronica. It’s sometimes quite pleasant. I like that kind of thing, but most of the time it seems like the minimum has been done; you know, there is very little sonically beyond the mid and low sub-bass and that’s fine, I guess. The Rihanna track is the “best” I think; Drake’s verse is quite good for the flow, if not the content. The worst has to be the number 1; what is that all about? It’s like a humbebrag tweet but in song form that name drops right there in the second line. The best thing is the “inspiration” for the song, which you can read here on Wikipedia, but it’s basically “I took a pill in Ibiza whilst watching Aviici and after wards I felt like I’d aged ten years” which is the exact lyrics.

I pine for the 1990s. Man, lyrics back then were so much better, weren’t they? Right?
